The Canyon Intermediate School counseling program is a comprehensive and developmental approach. Prevention is a priority, and this consists of classroom guidance, small group activities, and individual counseling. The counselors at Canyon Intermediate work hand in hand with staff, parents, and the community to assist with student academic, emotional, and social support.
Classroom guidance uses a framework of the character education program (Character Counts Coalition) that Canyon ISD has adopted. The counselors model and work with students to incorporate the pillars of good character into practical living. Respect, responsibility, caring, citizenship, trustworthiness, and fairness are incorporated into lessons to help students take a healthy place in the community.
Lessons applicable to the needs of students are also provided: bullying, test anxiety, self-esteem, etc. as teachers, parents, or students themselves present concerns with the difficulty of pre-adolescence.
Individual counseling is available as needed for students who are having problems. Parents, teachers, administrators, or students themselves may request time with a counselor. Resources and information can be provided to help with specific concerns. The counselors want the counseling center to be a safe place for students to come when they need to talk about their concerns or problems.
